ICE Essay Contest - Winners Announced!

Darrel Deide, Chairman of the Political Action Committee, Idahoans for Choice in Education, today announced the winners of the 2009 essay contest.  Essays were received from 334 Idaho charter school students, representing nearly 2/3 of Idaho’s charter schools.  Essays entitled “Why Education Choice is Important to Me and My Family” were to be 600 words or less.   There were two divisions, one for students in grades 7-9 and a second for grades 10-12.  The awards totaling $2,000.00 will be presented in the student’s respective schools by the Treasurer of the Committee, Holland Johnson of Nampa.

The winners in the Junior High Division were:
First place $500, Meredith Thompson, 8th grade, Idaho Virtual Academy, Orofino -read essay
Second place $300, Mickaila Rigby, 9th grade, Vision Charter School, Middleton -read essay
Third place $200, Zachary Adams, 9th grade, Meridian Technical Charter School, Meridian -read essay

The Winners in the Senior High Division were:
First place $500, Emily Emerson, 12th grade, Idaho Arts Charter School, Nampa -read essay
Second place $300, Rachel M. Finley, 12th grade, Victory Charter School, Nampa -read essay
Third place $200, Kyle Ward 10th grade, Jefferson Charter School, Caldwell -read essay

These essays posted on the Committee’s website ice-pac.net will also be made available to members of the Idaho Legislature, State Department of Education, and the Charter School Commission.
